Highlights
- Samoa Joe's reign as AEW World Champion hasn't had many standout moments and he feels more like a transitional titleholder.
- Swerve Strickland and Adam Page's feud may end up costing them both the chance to win the AEW World Title, allowing Samoa Joe to hold onto it longer.
- AEW should capitalize on Swerve Strickland's momentum and make him the next AEW World Champion at Revolution 2024.
Samoa Joe may have only fairly recently become the new AEW World Champion after dethroning MJF at the recent Worlds End PPV event at the back end of 2023. However, the time is already approaching for the next AEW World Champion to be crowned. The AEW roster is jam-packed full of countless talented individuals who are deserving of a shot at the AEW World Title, but there is one name in particular whose time is now to be coated in gold, and that is the red-hot Swerve Strickland. No matter what, he needs to be the next AEW World Champion.
AEW Likes Long Reigns, But Samoa Joe Should Drop The Gold Soon
Samoa Joe Only Won The AEW World Title In December
- Samoa Joe ended MJF’s longest ever AEW World Title reign
- Samoa Joe has only had one title defense
- AEW gave Samoa Joe his moment, but he feels like a transitional titleholder
Aside from a game of hot potato back in 2022 due to CM Punk getting injured, AEW World Championship reigns have generally been pretty lengthy. For instance, MJF held the belt recently for over a year, and this adds importance to title changes and makes it even more special to win the AEW World Title. Samoa Joe fits the bill of a dominant monster champion, but AEW should arguably go in a different direction, even though his reign hasn’t yet had many great moments aside from a fun title match against Hook.
10 Reasons Why AEW's Viewership & Audiences Might Be Dropping
There are plenty of reasons AEW is starting to decline in terms of viewership! At this point in his career, even though he is putting in some good work, Joe isn’t the man to build AEW around, especially as they are looking to procure some momentum in 2024. Joe is much older and seen by some as an “ex-WWE” and “ex-TNA” guy rather than a hot marketable star. For this reason (among others), his reign hasn’t had much of a spark thus far, and that would be a sign to keep Joe as nothing more than a transitional champion.
Swerve Strickland Could Miss Out Due To His Feud With Adam Page
Swerve Strickland & Adam Page Are Both Gunning For The AEW World Championship
- It feels as though the likely scenario will see Sweve Strickland & Adam Page cost each other the belt
- Samoa Joe will probably hold the world title for a little longer
- AEW should push Swerve Strickland to win
The Road to Revolution 2024 has seen a three-way feud between Samoa Joe, Adam Page, and Swerve Strickland. It has been refreshing seeing a busier world title picture instead of just two guys going at it, and the return of rankings has ensured that only the biggest and best winners right now are the ones gunning for the AEW World Title. Strickland and Page are two men with a huge problem with another, as their rivalry at the back end of 2023 was one of the biggest highlights of AEW programming ever.
Why Sting Should Retire As A Champion From AEW
Sting's wrestling career is almost at and end, but before he retires, the Icon needs to win AEW tag team gold with Darby Allin.Due to this, there is a sense that when the time comes for the PPV title match, the hatred shared towards one another will end up costing them both the AEW World Title, allowing Samoa Joe to escape with the belt for a little longer before losing it at the following PPV or beyond. The fact that fans can forecast this potential booking path isn’t a good sign, and it would certainly do no favors to the stock of Joe as a strong champion, nor the momentum of Strickland, who really needs to continue building with wins upon wins after losing out in the Continental Classic.
AEW Cannot Waste Time With Swerve Strickland
Swerve Strickland Should Win The Title At Revolution 2024
At times, AEW has missed out on fully capitalizing on the momentum of a red-hot star. For instance, Adam Page is a victim of this as his momentum was squandered in 2022, and Orange Cassidy has gone from the most over man in the company a few months back to settling into the background. Strickland has too much potential as a main eventer to let this moment slip away. Tony Khan really needs to strike whilst Strickland is feeling like a major name. His reactions are growing, he is hugely over, he is younger than some of AEW’s other top names, and he is someone new and fresh for the world title too.
Deonna Purrazzo: Has AEW Already Messed Up Their Newest Signing?
When Deonna Purrazzo debuted in AEW, she immediately went after Women's Champion Toni Storm, but that might be a mistake for her wrestling career. It does feel inevitable that Strickland will be the next AEW World Champion, but it needs to happen sooner rather than later, especially with so many more big names lining up. Strickland needs his moment now, so he can then carry the AEW World Title into the summer months with a wave of support and electricity. At Revolution, Strickland needs to leave as the new AEW World Champion.
