The moment Goldberg vs The Fiend was announced for WWE's Super ShowDown event, the reaction was swift and controversial. But, WWE going this direction makes sense, especially when you hear about how the match might go down.
Not everyone was pleased with the news Goldberg vs The Fiend was made official. In fact, a number of fans were immediately concerned this bout was signalling the end of the title run for The Fiend and that WWE was considering putting the Universal Championship around the waist of a former champion who is no longer really a member of WWE.
If early rumors are accurate, that is not the case at all.
The rumored plan is for The Fiend to retain. And, this entire match was put together as a way for Wyatt to gain momentum heading into WrestleMania 36 where WWE wants fans to believe he has the chance to defeat his next challenger, Roman Reigns.
WWE's current belief is that SmackDown doesn't have a babyface worthy of putting up an actual challenge to the Fiend's reign. Daniel Bryan might have been it, but the two have met twice. Roman Reigns is being saved for WrestleMania. That means the company needed someone with street cred that would get fans to question whether or not The Fiend could make it to WrestleMania at all.
The other option was not to have The Fiend defend at SuperShow Down, but WWE wanted him to defend his title before WrestleMania 36 and bringing in Goldberg for the Super ShowDown show as an attraction checks two items off of WWE's to-do list. Since Reigns will likely become the #1 contender at Elimination Chamber, this could be The Fiend’s final title defense until April.
How Will the Match Go?
Also interesting, the early plan seems to be to book Goldberg vs The Fiend in much the same way Rollins vs The Fiend was booked. Goldberg will get the early spear and jackhammer in and The Fiend will barely kick out. This will get fans pumped thinking that Goldberg could upset the champion.
From there, The Fiend is set to take numerous spears and jackhammers and ultimately, none will be able to put him away.
This isn't great for Goldberg's legacy, but he's going to look strong for most of the match and get his big spots in. Plus, the money he's being paid helps him overlook the fact he's about to put The Fiend over.
