Apple has discontinued the iPhone SE 2020 (2nd gen) now that it has announced a new model. The web listing for the phone has been taken down.
Following the launch of the iPhone SE 3, it appears Apple has discontinued its predecessor, the iPhone SE (2nd generation). Apple has a tradition of keeping select models from the previous generations in production even after it has announced a new iPhone. It not only keeps manufacturing them but even sells them at a lower price than they originally launched at.
Apple currently sells not only the iPhone 13 series but the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 12 mini. By keeping these older models in stock, those who cannot afford the new ones can still pick up a brand new iPhone, albeit an older generation model. These devices come with all the benefits of buying a new device such as trade-ins, monthly installment payments, and warranties. For some other manufacturers, the launch of a new phone means all older models have been discontinued. Google is a perfect example as it is quick to discontinue older models even before a new model has been released.
The current iPhone lineup on the Apple website no longer includes the iPhone SE (2nd gen). The listing for the phone has been pulled down, and this can only mean one thing — it has been discontinued. This development comes as a surprise given that Apple was expected to keep selling the phone and even slash its price, which would have made it the cheapest available iPhone. The original iPhone SE launched in 2016 was discontinued in 2018, two years before the iPhone SE (2nd gen) was announced in 2020.
There Is Still Hope
Although the iPhone SE (2nd gen) is no longer listed on Apple's website, it doesn't mean that buyers can't get their hands on it anymore. Apple has authorized resellers that include network carriers and online and offline retailers, so there is a high chance they still have stock of the phone. However, when they run out, they won't be able to restock since the discontinuation means no new units are being manufactured.
For those who don't mind shelling out a few extra bucks, the iPhone SE (3rd gen) is a good bet. The new model has the same design as its predecessor, but packs a more powerful chipset, a 5G modem, and a handful of new camera features. Apple also says the new iPhone SE has better battery life, as it provides up to two hours more video playback than its predecessor. The phone will be available for pre-order on March 11 and open for purchase on March 18.
