Community is finally getting to fulfill its "6 seasons and a movie" promise. Here's everything we know about its release and cast.

The Community cast looking glum

Summary

  • The long-awaited Community movie has been confirmed and is in development, creating immense anticipation among its cult following.
  • The Community movie is expected to have a more grounded story that focuses on the characters rather than the high-concept episodes of the series, according to creator Dan Harmon.
  • Star Joel McHale has suggested that filming may happen in summer 2024, for a holiday 2024 release.

The cast of the Community movie continues to tease the long-awaited feature-length finale to round off the cult comedy, as And A Movie has been in development for several years — but it is still on the way. It was years until Abed's prophecy of "six seasons and a movie" would come true, and in September 2022 And A Movie, the feature-length follow-up to 2015's Community season 6, was confirmed as greenlit by Sony TV and Peacock. However, few other details came with the announcement that And A Movie would be arriving on Peacock.

Community first debuted on NBC in September 2009 and follows a study group at Greendale Community College. In 2014, NBC axed the comedy after the 5th season, but it was revived for a 6th and final season on Yahoo! Screen. Community had a small but loyal fanbase during its original run, but that grew into a cult following in the years after it ended. It's been an incredibly popular title on multiple streaming platforms including Netflix, and online memes have also helped the Community fanbase to grow since its cancelation - all of which has added to the immense anticipation for the Community movie.

Latest News About The Community Movie

Joel McHale Shares Filming Update

After the resolution of the SAG/AFTRA strikes, star Joel McHale has commented on the status of the Community movie, in an interview with Screen Rant for the horror-comedy It's a Wonderful Knife. He revealed that the cast is currently figuring out schedules for when to shoot, and that he is hopeful for filming to happen next summer, even mentioning the possibility of a holiday release next year.

I'm very happy it's the end, and Andrew Guest is writing it, as well. It's great, and I'm not going to tell you anything about it, but I hope we can shoot it in, I think, next summer? Just because trying to get everybody together the first time was hard, and Donald's turned into — I don't know if you know this, but his career's gone okay. So, just getting everybody back together, I mean, everybody in the cast is working, thank God. So, I think it'll be next summer, and I might be talking out of my a--, but that seems like enough lead time to get everybody together. I have to finish Animal Control, which I am very excited to return to. So, that all said, I think it'll be next summer, hopefully, with probably a holiday release is my guess? Yeah, it's a quick turnaround, but I believe that it can happen.

After Dan Harmon's far less optimistic update in October, this is great news for Community fans, although it is not yet officially confirmed.

The Community Movie Is Confirmed

It's official — the Community movie is happening. Even though there had been talks of a Community movie since before the TV series ended, no official news of its development was confirmed until long after season 6 finished. It wasn't until September 2022 that the movie was finally announced with Joel McHale tweeting out the announcement and tagging several of the show's cast members. Dan Harmon is returning to write the movie alongside series veteran Andrew Guest, and it is being developed by Peacock as likely a streaming exclusive project.

The Community movie release date has yet to be confirmed. However, the project seemed to be moving quickly since its announcement in September 2022, with Joel McHale discussing a Community movie table read and Donald Glover giving updates on the expected filming schedule. Now, Joel McHale has suggested that filming will take place in the summer of 2024, with hopes for a "quick turnaround" and a holiday 2024 release.

Community Movie Cast

The cast of Community is dressed as Pulp Fiction characters.

The Community movie cast promises to see most of the beloved characters from the series return. When Joel McHale tweeted out the announcement in September 2022, he tagged several of the cast members, seemingly confirming their involvement. Along with McHale as Jeff Winger, this included Allison Brie as Annie Eddison, Gillian Jacobs as Britta Perry, Danny Pudi as Abed Nadir, Yvette Nicole Brown as Shirley Bennett, Donald Glover as Troy Barnes, and Ken Jeong as Ben Chang. Another key cast member likely to return is Jim Rash as Dean Pelton.

Chevy Chase's Pierce Hawthorne left Community in season 4 when the character was killed off, and given the way Chase left the show, it can be assumed that he will not be returning. Several notable supporting players who could return include Erik Charles Nielsen as Garrett, Dino Stamatopoulos as Star-Burns, John Oliver as Ian Duncan and Charles Koontz as Neil. There is also the possibility of several characters who were added to later seasons of Community making a return, including Keith David as Elroy Patashnik and Paget Brewster as Frankie Dart.

Community Movie Story Details

Community movie story details have not been shared, but it seems that fans can expect a more grounded story than some of the most memorable episodes of the series. Dan Harmon revealed that fans should not expect the movie to delve into some of the fan-favorite Community aspects like the paintball episodes or the Dungeons and Dragons episodes.

According to Harmon, such ideas were "the first things to rule out because it’s the first thing off the top of your head." As popular as these types of high-concept episodes were for fans of the genres being spoofed, Harmon's reluctance to return to them suggests he is trying to do something original and focus on the characters for ...And A Movie, which is good news for fans of Community.
