  • Despite the uncertainty, Rhodes and Uso have the potential to deliver a memorable and emotional title reign, showcasing their talent and chemistry as a team.

At the press conference following WWE’s Fastlane premium live event, Cody Rhodes was asked about “finishing the story.” Rhodes and Jey Uso had just defeated The Judgment Day to become the new Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions. ComicBook.com’s Matt Aguilar asked how this all fit in. To this, Rhodes replied by saying, “I must say this. In regards to everything I do, what's in my mind and what I came back to do, the story specifically, not flinching. And there's a lot of reasons to flinch.” With Rhodes having been kept away from Roman Reigns and the world title scene since then, it leaves the question of where exactly this will lead Rhodes and how it ultimately will benefit his direction for the next few months to come.

Cody Rhodes' Career Since Losing To Roman Reigns

Despite him losing at WrestleMania 39, Rhodes has constantly been a theorized fan-favorite to be the one to dethrone Reigns and end his historic Undisputed WWE Universal Championship run. In the months after his big loss, Rhodes had a months-long feud with Brock Lesnar and faced Dominik Mysterio at Money in the Bank.

In more recent times, Rhodes has also aligned himself with Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, and more in the pursuit of battling The Judgment Day. This resulted in their match at Fastlane where Uso and Rhodes defeated Damien Priest and Finn Bálor to win the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles. It was a tremendous win, with Uso and Rhodes showing the chemistry that they had.

Does This Tag Team Title Reign Help Cody Rhodes?

While the win was important, one must question where exactly this fits into the story of Rhodes in WWE. Ever since he beat Lesnar, and even got an endorsement from him, he has felt lost in the shuffle on Monday nights. He has been kept away from World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, which is ultimately the right move as that is not the major title he should be going after. But, what does a tag team title win do for the title being except keep him busy? The same also goes for Jey Uso.

Both are currently in a cool down period in their careers, having been involved in major main event storylines with other top names in WWE. Without a doubt they need to be kept away from The Bloodline for now. But, now that they have beat The Judgment Day, where do they go from here? The Judgment Day’s main story is within themselves and the seeds of tension between members. They cannot just suddenly get back on the same page just to combat Rhodes and Uso. That simply would not make any sense for them going forward. This will undoubtedly leave Rhodes and Uso in an awkward period as to where they go next. Who realistically will be the ones that dethrone their championship reign?

While this win leads to a lot more questions than answers, Rhodes and Uso can certainly deliver fans a memorable and great title reign. They are both superbly talented professional wrestlers who know how to deliver emotional and story driven performances. In addition, they have been attached to each other for months now which makes their partnership make sense The main issue is that WWE does not book themselves into a corner with not just Rhodes, but Jey as well. Jey still has a rivalry in the future with his brother, Jimmy, that must be told at some point. Meanwhile, where will Rhodes championship ambitions take him next in regard to “finishing the story” and defeating Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship?

Teaming With Jey Uso Could Be Beneficial For Cody Rhodes

While fans will get these questions answered at some point, it is difficult right now to tell exactly where Rhodes will go on RAW moving forward. He is in a strange in-between period right now in his WWE career. It is truly the first time he has felt directionless since he made his return to WWE back in 2022. But, on the other hand, this partnership with Jey Uso will give him something to do in the meantime. The same can also be said for Uso.

However, WWE cannot simply give them a meaningless title reign while they figure out what to do with them. Hopefully, this reign proves to be something that will ultimately have benefits. Rhodes added this statement during the press conference about it, (h/t ComicBook.com), saying “I'm aware of everything that's going around, but I'm also aware of what happens when I go out there. I'm aware of what we [Jey Uso] did tonight, so not flinching.”
