Actor Walton Goggins opens up about Justified: City Primeval, shedding light on why he didn’t reprise his role as Boyd Crowder for the revival.

A battered Raylan and Boyd walking together in Justified

Original Justified actor Walton Goggins explains why his character, Boyd Crowder, isn't a part of Justified: City Primeval. In the role of Boyd, Goggins appeared in every season of the original Justified series. Though he was originally meant to die in the premiere episode, Boyd was kept around after executive producer Graham Yost and test audiences responded favorably to Goggins' performance. In the process, Boyd went from a guest character to one of the show's most memorable regulars.

In an interview with The Wrap conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Goggins addressed why he isn't a part of the Justified: City Primeval cast. He mentioned, in part, that it "isn't the right place and time" and added that the choice to stay out of Justified's revival wasn't "one-sided." Still, Goggins praises lead actor Timothy Olyphant for his lead role as Raylan Gives, in addition to complimenting new antagonist Boyd Holbrook. Read his full quote below:

“There’s a season, kind of, for everything. This isn’t the right place and time. But I can’t wait to see it, and I can’t wait to see Raylan Givens again. Tim [Olyphant] is such a wonderful actor and Boyd Holbrook — I love him. I’ll be there. I’ll be watching it to the bitter end.”

What To Know About Justified: City Primeval

Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens in Justified: City Primeval

The eight-episode revival, which premiered on July 18 on FX and is available for next-day streaming on Hulu, picks up a decade after the original Justified ended. Givens has moved from his hometown to Miami, and he's doing his best to balance his job as a U.S. Marshal and being a parent to a 15-year-old girl (played by Olyphant's real-life daughter, Vivian). That becomes more complicated once Givens heads to Detroit, as he will cross paths with a violent desperado known as The Oklahoma Wildman (Holbrook), who has a history of slipping away without getting caught. He'll attempt to do so again with the help of a powerful lawyer.

In addition to Vivian Olyphant and Holbrook, the supporting Justified: City Primeval cast includes Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis, Adelaide Clemens, Vondie Curtis Hall, Marin Ireland, Norbert Leo Butz, Victor Williams, Keith David, and Ravi Patel. The revival, which takes inspiration from the Elmore Leonard novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, has Dave Andron and Michael Dinner as co-showrunners.

Although he's not involved with Justified: City Primeval, Goggins could return to play Boyd Crowder down the line, and even Olyphant has mentioned his interest in playing Raylan Givens again. Given the positive response to the new series so far, FX may be open to more seasons of the crime drama, and that could potentially open the door for an appearance by Goggins.
